Mirabai Chanu Weightlifting Live Score, Paris Olympics 2024, Women 49 kg Weightlifting Match Latest Updates: Mirabai Chanu became the latest addition to India’s list of 4th placed finishes at Paris 2024, as she finished just outside the podium places in the women’s 49kg event.
In Tokyo, it was Mirabai who had opened India’s account with a total lift of 202 Kg in women’s 49 Kg category. A year later, her gold medal winning efforts at the Commonwealth Games saw her lift 201 Kg. Despite suffering from frequent injuries and not competing frequently internationally, Mirabai did well to get to 88kg in Snatch but in Clean & Jerk a failed first attempt of 111kg made her life difficult. She finished with a total of 199kg while the bronze medal went to 200kg.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu showcased impressive strength with a successful 88kg snatch lift. However, a failed first clean and jerk attempt threatened her medal hopes. Despite recovering with a successful second lift, Thailand's Surodchana Khambao's subsequent lift pushed Chanu out of medal contention. A heartbreaking missed final lift left Chanu in fourth place, with just one kilogram separating her from a bronze medal.
It brings an end to a forgettable day for India at Paris 2024, with heartbreaks and disappointments galore.

Rather than being obsessed about the total at her only event in 2024, the initial plan, according to Sharma, was to just execute one lift in each of the two sections, snatch followed by clean and jerk. During warm-up, they considered the idea of attempting all six lifts. “We wanted to test our limits and see if she remained pain free,” Sharma says. She did. And for Mirabai, that was more critical than winning a medal. “If by training this much I lifted 184, then it gives me confidence that I am headed in the right direction,” Mirabai had said.

SNATCH IS DONE: Oh well well well. What do we have here. The Chinese coach doesn't look happy as the outright favourite Zhihui Hou doesn't get her 3rd lift right for 93kg! And we have a surprise leader at the end of the Snatch section. Romania's Mihaela Valentina Cambei is in the lead with a super final lift of 93kg! A 5kg advantage for the Romanian there is only 1kg difference between Mira and the Chinese star.

At the Asian Championships in 2021, when she was perhaps at her peak, she had a best snatch attempt of 86kg and a best C&J of 119kg for a superb total of 205kg. She has tended to prefer C&J more (held the World Record once), snatch has been an area where she has faced issues. So when she comes out for 85kg, the first attempt being successful will be a shot in the arm.

So, a quick explainer. There are two stages to weightlifting finals. First is, SNATCH. The athlete is required to pick up the barbell at a pre-set weight and lift it above their head in one singular motion. A successful attempt requires a majority of the three judges to declare it as good. Each weightlifter gets three attempts in Snatch at progressively higher weights after each successful lift. The weights are decided by the athletes and their coaches. If an athlete is not able to register a single good lift in Snatch, their event is over. Then comes, CLEAN AND JERK. The athlete needs to lift the barbell in a single movement from the platform to the shoulders, while either splitting or bending the legs (clean). The athlete bends the legs and extends them as well as the arms to bring the barbell to the full stretch of the arms vertically extended (Jerk). There are three attempts here as well. The maximum weight lifted in SNATCH and the maximum weight lifted in CLEAN & JERK will then be added up for the total.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu faced a significant setback due to multiple injuries over the past 18 months, culminating in a complete training halt after the Asian Games. Her hip and shoulder issues limited her lifting capacity, and she required extensive rehabilitation to regain strength and endurance.
